Generally called timepieces, a wristwatch is designed to constantly be in operation despite whatever movements its wearer makes.

Wristwatches, as the name implies, are designed to be adorned on the wrist and its held in place either by a strap, elastic band or bracelet. Not until the 17th century did wristwatches become popularly used although other types of timepieces were in wide use, especially the pocket watch which had been in wide circulation from the 14th century. All clocks and watches before the advent of the electronic quartz watch in the 1960s, were basically spring-powered, which means that timepieces before now were full-time mechanical devices which relied on its user to wind a mainspring which through clockwork activity triggers and works an oscillating balance wheel which maintains precision and powers the whole device; the oscillating wheel balance technology is very much in wide use even until this day.

The 1960s saw a total overhaul and revolution from the rudimentary technology which powered all timepieces as there was a migration from the full-function mechanical oscillating wheel balance to battery-powered electronic quartz watches and even clocks.

The electronic battery-powered quartz wristwatches which we all use today is a far cry from the mechanical timepiece technology which was in wide use before its advent, a typical battery-powered electronic quartz wristwatch keeps time with a constantly vibrating quartz crystal, nearly all watches today run on this technology. What most people do not know that is that business in the timepiece world runs on a different traction as expensive top range wristwatches are valued thus not for the level of technology that runs on or operates them but surprisingly, these range of wristwatches owe their value to the level of creative design, craftsmanship and external aesthetics another shocker is that most of the top range expensive wristwatches all run on the old mechanical (spring-winding) technology which when it comes to its basic function of timekeeping most times turnout out to be grossly inaccurate compared to its electronic quartz counterpart. While the less expensive to inexpensive wristwatches all run on the battery-powered electronic quartz technology.

Today wristwatches have the day, month, year and even the current phase of the moon including other functions like the barometer, speedometer etc incorporated into them.

The 1990s saw a major advancement in wristwatch technology as digital wristwatches came to the fore away from the popular rudimentary designs to sci-fi-looking digital wristwatches which had embedded in them, alarms, calculators, chronographs, various timers, GPS, Bluetooth, radio clock etc.
