YOUSSOU N'DOUR #MusicLegends

Known as the most famous music artiste to come out of Senegal and that part of the continent. Music legend, Youssou N'Dour, was born on October 1, 1959, in the Senegalese capital city of Dakar, to a Serer father and Wolof mother.

Gifted with a voice like no other, Youssou N'Dour aside from being a versatile musician and songwriter, also doubles as an actor, businessman, and a politician.

Youssou's journey into music began at age 12 and found his way into Dakar's most popular musical band at the time, Star Band.

Due to his dual cultural upbringing, Youssou developed his own unique musical style called the mbalax which he renders in this paternal language, Serer.

Made popular by Youssou N'Dour, mbalax finds its root in a form of traditional Serer conservative music called, Njuup.

The world music star has featured in the following movies which he also played lead roles:

Amazing Grace (2006)
Return To Goree (2007)
Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love (2008)

April of 2012 saw Youssou N'Dour rise to the political post of Senegal's Tourism Minister which he relinquished in September of the next year.
Being one of Africa's most celebrated music icons globally, Youssou, put together his very own epic musical band in 1979 called the Etoile de Dakar, which later metamorphosed to Super Etoile de Dakar with the likes of popular talking drum player Assane Thiam, Habib Faye on bass guitar and the iconic Jimi Mbaye on guitar.

Popular for taking mbalax to the world, Youssou N'Dour, has through the years experimented with his unique sound by fusing it with Afro-Carribean along with deep latin musical sounds to produce hit songs which the world has come to greatly appreciate.
